FC Porto has once again conquered the Champions League, defeating Barcelona 3-1 in a final where the Dragons stormed out of the gates and never let go of their European dream. Two years after their 2023 triumph, Porto reclaims its throne atop European roller hockey.
The atmosphere at the Dr. Mário Mexia Pavilion was electric from the very first second, and FC Porto was quick to seize the moment. Within the opening minute, Marc Grau received a blue card, giving Carlo Di Benedetto a chance to score from a direct free kick, but he missed. It was only a warning.
Two minutes in, Rafa netted the opening goal, igniting the blue-and-white stands. Barcelona struggled to breathe under the suffocating pressure applied by Paulo Freitas’s side. In the 8th minute, Gonçalo Alves doubled the lead with a spectacular goal worthy of a European final, pushing the Dragons even closer to glory.
Ricardo Ares’s team took time to respond. Even power-play opportunities failed to yield solutions against Porto’s aggressive, focused defense, anchored by an outstanding Malián in goal. Only near halftime did the Catalans pose a real threat, but Marc Grau and Alabart were repeatedly denied by Porto’s goalkeeper.
Barcelona gained new life early in the second half when Benedetto conceded a penalty and Alabart converted to make it 2-1 in the 28th minute. For a few minutes, the uncertainty typical of grand finals hung in the air.
Yet FC Porto never wavered. Even after squandering two numerical advantages, the Dragons remained composed, calm, and competitive. With about six minutes left, the moment that practically sealed the title arrived: Telmo Pinto scored to make it 3-1, triggering an explosion of joy in the pavilion. The European dream was turning ever more blue.
In the final minutes, Barcelona threw everything forward. But they faced a Porto side transformed into a stone wall, refusing to yield under Catalan pressure.
When the final buzzer sounded, Coimbra was awash in blue and white. FC Porto was, once again, champion of Europe.
