Spain’s vehicle registration plates are set to shift again from summer 2026, though not in the way many might expect. No new plates or system redesign will be introduced, but fresh letter combinations never seen before will begin to appear.
The current registration system, launched in 2000, will continue to operate exactly as it does now. The only update is the natural progression of the letter sequence, which advances according to the pace of new vehicle registrations.
A system unchanged since 2000
The introduction of the so-called European license plate removed provincial references and adopted a uniform format across the country: four digits followed by three letters. The system excludes vowels and certain characters to avoid confusion or undesirable combinations. Thanks to this, Spain has millions of possible combinations without needing to modify the existing model.
Which plates will arrive in 2026?
The series starting with the letter N began in 2025 and has steadily progressed since. According to forecasts, the first NNY combinations will appear around June 2026. From there, the sequence will move quickly through the summer months, a particularly strong period for new car sales and thus plate consumption.
The market sets the pace
The registration system depends directly on the number of vehicles sold. In Spain, tens of thousands of new cars are registered each month, though the pace picks up at certain points, especially toward the end of a quarter. This means specific series advance faster during particular times of the year, such as just before summer.
Beware of re-registrations
While a license plate can hint at a car’s age, it does not always reflect the actual manufacturing date. Some vehicles have been legally re-registered and show much newer plates. Therefore, before buying a used car, it is advisable to check official DGT reports, which show the vehicle’s first registration date.
The next major letter
If the current market pace holds, the next big milestone will be the arrival of the letter P, expected by late 2026 or early 2027. This will be another step in a system that has been running without major changes for over two decades and continues to evolve quietly alongside Spain’s auto market.
