Minnesota United FC midfielder James Rodríguez prepares to pass the ball.

Colombian international James Rodríguez will depart Minnesota United next week and will not return to the club following the World Cup, according to sources familiar with the situation.

The 34-year-old is expected to leave Minnesota to join Colombia’s national team for the World Cup after the Loons’ match on Wednesday.

Rodríguez’s contract with Minnesota runs through June 30 and includes an option for the second half of the year. The club has not exercised that option, which must be decided by June 1. Minnesota wanted to respect James’ wishes and would only activate it if he desired.

The decision formally ends an unusual stint, as Rodríguez made just four MLS appearances, starting only once. His next match for Minnesota is Sunday at home against Austin FC.

Reports from AS Colombia indicated that Rodríguez may retire after the World Cup, while Apple TV’s Michele Giannone also confirmed his departure from the Loons.

The midfielder played in both of Colombia’s matches during the last international break and is expected to be a key figure for the team at the World Cup.

Minnesota sources described James as a consummate professional during his time with the club, despite often being unavailable for selection.
